Themester Event
#WUmester
For one of themester events, I attended the art exhibit in the Mulvane Art Museum. The art exhibit is called Juror's Statement. There were many drawings, paintings, and sculptures that each expressed a different message through artwork. A statement written about the exhibit quoted Picasso, "Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth." This art exhibit was very inspiring with the diverse range of voice and expression. Each piece of art told a different story that gave a different truth.
I'm just going to touch on a few of the artwork pieces that I could feel the artist's voice.
The first one was a painting called "Honeymoon" of two men leaning on a car together looking to be holding hands and looking out over a lake. I felt this was powerful, especially in today's society. The ability to express love in public is so important. I loved this painting and the depiction of same-gender love.
There was a painting of a black woman smiling and it was called "This Life Matters." I love this painting because it is so simple but so powerful at the same time. This black woman's life matters as much as my own.
There was a digital photograph/painting that was called "Subjacent." There's a naked woman slumped over with her head down with an owl on top of her back. Subjacent means to be under someone or something else, so in this case I believe the painting is saying the woman is placed beneath even this owl. That spoke to me on a personal level, because woman are so often misjudged and misplaced in society.
There were so many other beautiful, powerful pieces that really showed the power of freedom of speech and expression through them. I don't usually go to art exhibits, but I really appreciated this one and I believe it is definitely worth seeing.
